How to Convert HEIC to JPG on Windows 10 & 11.

Windows does not natively open HEIC files from iPhones. This guide covers three methods to convert HEIC to JPG on any Windows PC — including our free, private browser converter that requires zero installation.

Why Windows can't open HEIC files by default.

When you transfer photos from an iPhone to a Windows PC, you'll often encounter files with the .heic extension. Windows Photo Viewer, Paint, and most native Windows apps cannot open these files. This happens because HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) uses Apple's HEVC compression codec, which requires a paid license for Windows to decode. While Windows 11 added limited HEIC support through the Microsoft Store extension, many users still face issues — especially on Windows 10, older builds, and enterprise-managed machines where Store access is restricted.

Method 1: Use our free browser-based converter (recommended).

The fastest and most private way to convert HEIC to JPG on Windows is our in-browser converter below. It works on any Windows PC with Chrome, Edge, or Firefox — no software installation required. Your photos never leave your computer because all conversion happens locally using WebAssembly technology.

  1. Open this page in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox on your Windows PC.
  2. Drag and drop your HEIC files into the converter area below, or click "Browse" to select them from your file explorer.
  3. Adjust quality if desired (90% is recommended for the best balance of quality and file size).
  4. Click "Convert All" — your files are processed instantly in your browser's memory.
  5. Download individually or as a ZIP archive — your JPG files are ready to use anywhere.

This method is ideal for users who want a fast, private solution without installing desktop software or uploading photos to a third-party website.

Method 2: Install the HEIF Image Extensions from Microsoft Store.

Windows 11 (and some Windows 10 builds) can natively view HEIC files after installing two free extensions from the Microsoft Store: HEIF Image Extensions and HEVC Video Extensions. However, this only lets you view HEIC files in the Photos app — it does not convert them to JPG. To actually save as JPG, you would need to open each file in Paint, Photos, or another app and manually re-save it. This is impractical for bulk conversion of dozens or hundreds of photos.

Method 3: Use a desktop application.

Third-party desktop applications like IrfanView, GIMP, or Adobe Photoshop can open and convert HEIC files. These tools offer advanced editing capabilities but require installation and often involve a learning curve. For simple batch conversion without editing, our browser-based converter is faster and requires no setup.

FAQ

HEIC to JPG on Windows — common questions.

Why can't Windows open HEIC files from my iPhone?

Windows lacks a native HEVC decoder, which is required to read HEIC files. Apple uses HEIC as the default camera format since iOS 11 for its superior compression. Windows requires either the HEIF Image Extension from the Microsoft Store or a third-party converter to handle these files.

Is the browser-based converter safe for private photos?

Absolutely. Our converter uses WebAssembly to process files entirely within your browser's memory on your Windows PC. No files are uploaded to any server. Your photos never leave your device, making this the most private conversion method available.

Can I convert HEIC to JPG on Windows 10 without installing anything?

Yes! Our browser-based converter works on any Windows version with a modern web browser. Simply open this page in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox, drop your HEIC files, and convert. No software installation, no Microsoft Store extension, no account required.

How many HEIC files can I convert at once on Windows?

You can batch-convert up to 50 files at a time in a single queue. Since all processing happens in your browser using your PC's RAM and CPU, conversion speed depends on your system's hardware. Most modern Windows PCs can handle large batches without issues. You can download all converted files as a single ZIP archive.
