The short answer

Your iPhone photos are HEIC because Apple set it as the default camera format starting with iOS 11 in 2017. HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) uses advanced compression to create photos that are roughly half the size of JPG files while maintaining the same visual quality. Apple made this switch to help users store more photos on their devices without running out of space.

It’s not a bug — it’s a deliberate design decision. But if it’s causing compatibility headaches when you try to share or use your photos on other devices, you have several options to fix it.

Why Apple switched from JPG to HEIC

Apple didn’t switch to HEIC arbitrarily. There were three compelling reasons:

1. Storage savings are massive

The average iPhone user takes over 1,000 photos per year. With HEIC’s ~50% file size reduction compared to JPG, that translates to gigabytes of saved storage annually. For a phone with 128 GB of storage, this is significant — it’s the difference between running out of space and having room for thousands more photos.

Here’s what the savings look like in practice:

Photos takenStorage in JPGStorage in HEICSavings
1,000~3.5 GB~1.8 GB1.7 GB
5,000~17.5 GB~9.0 GB8.5 GB
10,000~35.0 GB~18.0 GB17.0 GB

2. Better quality in a smaller package

HEIC doesn’t just compress more — it compresses smarter. The HEVC codec preserves more detail in highlights, shadows, and color gradients than JPG’s older DCT compression. Your iPhone photos actually look slightly better in HEIC than they would at the equivalent JPG file size.

3. Advanced features need HEIC

Modern iPhone camera features rely on the HEIC container:

If Apple used JPG, none of these features would be possible in a single file.

When HEIC becomes a problem

Despite its advantages, HEIC creates friction in several common scenarios:

Sharing with Windows users

If you text, email, or AirDrop a HEIC photo to someone with an older Windows PC, they may not be able to open it. While Windows 11 has improved HEIC support, Windows 10 users often need to install a separate extension, and Windows 7/8 users are out of luck entirely.

Uploading to websites

Many websites, job application portals, government forms, and CMS platforms still only accept JPG or PNG uploads. Try submitting a HEIC file and you’ll typically get an error message like “Unsupported file format.”

Printing

Online print services (Shutterfly, Snapfish, CVS, Walgreens) and retail photo kiosks overwhelmingly require JPG files. HEIC support in the printing industry is still sparse.

Editing in third-party software

While newer versions of Photoshop and Lightroom support HEIC, many other image editors — including popular free tools — do not. This is especially common on Windows.

Social media (sometimes)

Major platforms like Instagram and Facebook handle HEIC by converting it automatically during upload. But smaller platforms, forums, and messaging apps may not.

Fix 1: Change your iPhone camera to shoot JPG

The most permanent fix is to tell your iPhone to save photos as JPG instead of HEIC:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone
  2. Scroll down and tap Camera
  3. Tap Formats
  4. Select Most Compatible

That’s it. From now on, every new photo will be saved as a .jpg file.

What you should know

When to keep High Efficiency

If you have plenty of storage and primarily share photos within the Apple ecosystem (iMessage, AirDrop to other Apple devices), keeping the default HEIC setting makes sense. You get better storage efficiency with no compatibility friction.

Fix 2: Let your iPhone auto-convert when transferring

Apple built in a smart compatibility feature that many users don’t know about:

  1. Open Settings → Photos
  2. Under the Transfer to Mac or PC section, select Automatic

When set to Automatic, your iPhone will:

This is the best-of-both-worlds approach — you get HEIC’s storage savings on your phone and JPG compatibility when transferring.

Fix 3: Convert existing HEIC photos to JPG

If you already have a library of HEIC photos that you need in JPG format, here are your options:

Browser-based converter (fastest)

The quickest way to batch-convert HEIC photos is with a browser-based converter like ours:

  1. Open Bulk HEIC to JPG in Safari, Chrome, or any browser
  2. Select your HEIC photos from Files or Camera Roll
  3. Tap Convert — everything processes locally on your device
  4. Download the JPG versions

This works on iPhone, iPad, Mac, or PC. No app to install, no account to create, and your photos never leave your device.

Using the Files app (one at a time)

On iOS 16 and later:

  1. Open the Files app
  2. Long-press on a HEIC image
  3. Select Quick Actions → Convert Image
  4. Choose JPG and select your quality level

This works but is impractical for more than a few photos.

Using Shortcuts (batch, but complex)

You can create an iOS Shortcut to batch-convert HEIC to JPG:

  1. Open the Shortcuts app
  2. Create a new shortcut with these actions: Select Photos → Convert Image (to JPEG) → Save to Photo Album
  3. Run the shortcut and select your photos

This works for batch conversion but requires setup and runs slower than a browser-based tool.

Fix 4: Use iCloud’s built-in compatibility

If you use iCloud Photos:

This isn’t a comprehensive fix, but it helps in cloud-based workflows.

Which fix should you choose?

SituationRecommended Fix
You want all future photos as JPGFix 1: Change camera to “Most Compatible”
You want HEIC on phone, JPG when transferringFix 2: Set transfer mode to “Automatic”
You have existing HEIC photos to convert nowFix 3: Use our browser converter
You primarily share via iCloudFix 4: Use iCloud’s auto-conversion

For most users, we recommend Fix 2 (Automatic transfer) combined with Fix 3 (browser converter for existing files) as the ideal combination. You get storage efficiency on your device and seamless JPG compatibility when you need it.
